About the event
Lecture by Andrea Florit Goñalons at the Museu de Menorca (Maó) on November 17, 2026, at 7:30 PM. The talk will address the influence of national-Catholicism on festivities and the construction of gender roles during Francoism, analyzing how folklore and popular culture were used to transmit the regime's values and consolidate a model of the devout, pious wife and mother. Documented cases from the Balearic Islands will be presented, including the regulation of morality in dances and processions, the manipulation of traditional lyrics, and the representation of gender roles in the festive space. The session invites a critical look at inherited traditions and questions the social and moral construction of current behaviors, stereotypes, and roles, consolidated during the dictatorship. The activity is also available online. Registration opens on 10/30/2026. Sign language interpretation can be requested one week in advance.
